I have been a choreographer for over the last 20 years. For modern, the elements of dance are time space and energy. For ballet, the themes are usually more tied to a story and virtuosity of technique. For jazz, sharp dramatic lines and interesting formations along with strong sense of rhythm are emphasized. Similar emphasis on rhythm and catching the lyrical phrases are introduced and taught in hip hop and jazz.

My emphasis as a teacher in the grades of K-8 has been to introduce good choreography so they expand upon their movement vocabulary. Then as they grasp quality of movement I teach them phrasing and how they can use their body as a source of communication.

As a regular choreographer for St. George Dance Company, Summer Robertson has often interviewed the choreographers on their process of making the dance. Here is my process for Earl King.
